Homeopathy

Therapists- Maureen Chapple, Julia Peters, Keith Smeaton

Homeopathy is a safe system of medicine, which aims to assist the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. It recognises that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the patient who needs treatment and not just the disease. It therefore may be helpful in all cases of ill health no matter what the diagnosis.

Homeopathy as we know it today has been used for the past 200 years and was developed by a German Physician called Samuel Hahnemann, but the principle behind Homeopathy is 2,500 years old.  The word Homeopathy comes from the Greek and means ‘similar suffering’.  This refers to the central philosophy that a substance that can produce symptoms in a healthy person, can alleviate those symptoms in a person who is ill.

How does it work?

For instance, we know that when cutting a strong onion, we often experience a runny nose, sore throat and stinging, runny eyes. For a patient who is suffering from the common cold, or even hay fever, with these particular symptoms, a homeopath may prescribe Alium Cepa (the homeopathic remedy made from the red onion). The way of similars, the homeopathic way, is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance, which, if taken in its crude form, would produce those symptoms in a healthy person.  Because of the minute dosage, no side effects or addiction will result.  Hence it is also safe in infancy or pregnancy, where your Physician has decided that conventional drugs might be dangerous or inadvisable.

The Treatment

A Homeopath’s job is to match a remedy to your symptoms as you experience them.
He will be interested in finding out not only about your physical health but also about your emotional well being.  Symptoms are the body’s way of warning that all is not well and attempting to restore balance.

Treatment will be given usually in the form of tablets, but may come in powder or liquid form. It should be allowed to dissolve in your mouth and nothing else should be taken orally for 15 minutes before and after taking the remedy.

How do Homeopathic Remedies Interact with Other Medications?

Homeopathic remedies are safe and will not interfere with other forms of treatment. This is because only a very minute amount of the active ingredient is used in a specially prepared form.

How long is a Course of Treatment?

Generally this depends on what sort of illness you have.  A very slowly developing complaint will not disappear overnight, but other complaints like acute illnesses may improve rapidly.  Generally, in chronic disease we expect to see some significant improvement within the first month.

Regaining health

People who have had homeopathic treatment generally find that their state of health and well being has has improved. They may be better able to resist infection and have a greater stability and individual purpose in life. These improvements surely are real steps toward optimum health.

Our Therapists

Maureen Chapple

I became interested in homeopathy through personal experience. My husband had been very ill for two years after working abroad and no conventional treatments had helped. After visiting a homeopath he completely regained his health. My children and I also benefited greatly from homeopathy and so I decided to train professionally.

I qualified from the College of Homeopathy, London in 1991 and then registered with the Society of Homeopaths. For the past 20 years I have experienced the fulfillment that comes from seeing patients heal, blossom and grow as they are treated. I have taught homeopathy at adult education classes, run tutorial groups for students of various colleges and supervised them in their final degree years and their early years in practice.

I do not specialise in any one area, as all ages can benefit from the wonderful effects of homeopathy. I practice in Lee, S.E. London and in Kent. If you would like to talk to me about whether homeopathy could help you , please feel free to telephone me direct on 07792 242 475 or email me on chapple_canty@btinternet.com. My website is www.homoeopathythegentlehealer.co.uk

Julia Peters

Julia trained at The College of Homeopathy, based at Regents College, and has been practicing professionally since 1987. Her experience includes several years spent training and supervising students at the College of Homeopathy’s teaching clinic in London.

Julia has found herself particularly drawn to working with patients with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, PMS and other stress and hormone related disorders. Because of this interest, she chose to train as a counsellor and now utilises skills from this area, as well as homeopathy, in her work with clients.

Julia is Registered with the Society of Homeopaths and Accredited with the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy)

Julia practices at The Complementary Health Centre on Fridays, between 11:45am and 8:00pm. Individual sessions last for 45minutes and cost £38= Follow up appointments are usually every 3-4 weeks.

To make an appointment, or to discuss whether homeopathy is the right approach for you, you can either contact the Centre or call Julia direct on 020 8292 3081.

Julia is happy to see clients either for counselling or homeopathy, and finds the combination of both to be a particularly effective therapeutic approach.

Keith Smeaton

The practice of homeopathy has captured my heart and my mind. I believe that it is the answer to treating suffering both on a physical and emotional level. It brings a sense of balance into one's life, not just  relief of symptoms. I've treated hundreds of patients of all ages and my respect for the power of homeopathy continues to grow.

I have practiced homeopathy full-time for over 20 years. I qualified as a homeopath at the College of Homeopathy in London in 1988, and in the following year I was endorsed by the Society of Homeopaths (R.S.Hom). Since then I have built up busy practices in Reigate in Surrey, and Lee in South-East London. I work 2 days a week in London and 3 days a week in Reigate. I have also taught abroad for Homeopathic Charities in Belgrade and Cairo. Currently, as well as practicing homeopathy full-time, I teach and supervise 3rd and 4th year students of the South Downs School of Homeopathy (SDSH) in Chichester.

Having also studied counselling over a period of 4 years, I have a certificate in Advanced Counselling skills, which enables me to guide patients through difficult issues in their lives, and to reach a greater understanding of themselves.
