Esther first became interested in Pilates through her own experience with injury during her dance training at Laban. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Dance Theatre in 1998. A year later, after spine surgery, Pilates as well as massage became invaluable in the rehabilitation process and long term prevention of further damage. Esther became interested in the treatment and prevention of injury and she went on to study at the London School of Sports Massage. She has worked as a sports and remedial masseur for many years in a variety of places, from hotel spas to back stage in the West End. Her focus has always been on the management of dance injury and she worked for many years as a masseur for The Urdang Academy and later, Trinity Laban and The Royal Ballet. She returned to study at Trinity Laban in 2004 on the Pilates Foundation Teacher Training Programme and taught Pilates in a number of London studios and physiotherapy clinics thereafter. Pilates became a perfect combination with the deep tissue massage she had specialised in over the years and she treated many dance injuries through correcting anatomical imbalances and looking at training practices. Part of the process was to equip the dancer with the knowledge and skills to manage their injury themselves by looking at the cause in their individual bio-mechanics and training for prevention in the longer term. In teaching non-dancers she encouraged them to take responsibility for their treatment and, unsurprisingly, bad backs became her strength.
Over the years of studying, treating and teaching, Esther also developed an interest in anatomy and physiology and took over this aspect for the Pilates Foundation training course at Trinity Laban.
Taking a break to have a family, she returned to work with new classes in pre and post-natal Pilates. Again, Pilates proved invaluable in supporting her pregnancies and post-natal recovery and she enjoys sharing this experience with new mums. She completed the Pilates Foundation post graduate diploma in pre and post natal Pilates and has attended specialist workshops on pelvic floor health and diastasis recti recovery.
